He didn’t know what else he could do to prove to her he was going to stick around for both her and Sam and wasn’t going to break their hearts.

The only thing he could do was keep trying. He understood she’d had people let her down, so her lack of trust was understandable. Her own parents and Sam’s biological father had, for Christ’s sake, who could blame her for being gun shy?

“Where are we going?” she asked as he drove through the streets of San Diego.

“I probably should have asked you if you liked Italian first, but I thought we’d try a little family-owned place Cassie and Luke told me about, Figurino’s. They’re supposed to have the best ravioli in the city.”

“Oh, I love Italian, that sounds yummy.”

“We’ll find out together if it is,” he said and squeezed her thigh.

She looked over at him and smiled tentatively. He could tell she knew he was upset she said she didn’t want Sam to get too attached to him.

That was bullshit.

But slow and steady wins the race, so that’s how he’d proceed. Eventually, she’d realize it was safe for Sam to get attached—and for her as well.
